If direct mail is part of your daily to-do list, you’ve probably heard at least a little about the implementation of the Full Service Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb). While this was originally scheduled as a requirement for automation price discounts for January 26, 2014, the requirement has been delayed and discussion over its implementation continues. (Links to additional resources are below.)
Regardless of the implementation timeline, you should make sure you’re ready for the upcoming changes and above all know WHY Full Service matters:

- You’ll save money.
Get an additional per piece discount on every Full Service mailpiece. Plus Annual permit fees waived when 90 percent or more of cumulative annual mailings consist of Full-Service mail.
- Delivery is more accurate.
Address correction information comes at no additional cost for Full Service mailpieces, providing Change of Address (or COA) information and Nixie (or undeliverable-as-addressed) information.
- You’ll have more control.
Track service performance through reports and scan information – know when mailpieces are delivered to better plan staffing for call centers and time triggered marketing messages.
Full Service IMb is packed with benefits for mailers, but it does add a level of complexity to execution – that’s why it’s important to make sure your direct mail service provider is up-to-date with all the requirements, and has the software and technology needed to do the job right. The requirements are a significant advance over what many mailers are accustomed to.
